Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum) is the State Tree of Vermont (as well as New York, West Virginia and Wisconsin). The Triple- or trefoil-knot (sometimes called a triquetra) is a common symbol in Celtic art. The number three features heavily in Pagan Celtic mythology and early poetry. Later, tri-fold symbols came to represent the Holy Trinity.
Over the last three centuries, immigrants from three Celtic nations, Ireland, Scotland and Wales came to live and work in Vermont. When railroads opened up the stone quarrying industry they became associated with the regions where marble, granite and slate were found.
